A recent announcement from the Insurance Information Institute explained that Americans who are not careful on the road can risk increases to their auto insurance rates.
Drivers who have a poor accident or ticket record typically have to deal with higher rates than safer drivers, the III noted. In addition, car usage, location, age and gender can also play significant roles. However, there are many things a person can to do make sure they have an affordable plan.
"You may not have control over your gender or your age, but there's a lot you can do to keep rates down," said Loretta Worters, vice president with the III. "One of the most important is to be a safe driver. That means, don't speed, don't drink and drive and don't text while behind the wheel. And, remember, reckless driving isn't just costly, it's deadly."
Those who already drive safely may want to see if their current plan can be improved upon. With the many different auto insurance quotes available online, there may be a better offering with lower rates and more sufficient coverage.
