More insurance customers will be able to have high quality health coverage than at any time in recent historyonce the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act goes fully into effect, a new government report states.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, millions of Americans will have access to affordable, top-caliber health coverage in 2014 and beyond, largely as a result of the health marketplaces that states are setting up. Already, 20 states have given indications that the exchanges will be ready to go before January of next year.
"Before the health care law was passed, millions of Americans were unable to obtain or afford quality health coverage," said Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of HHS. "Today, we are proposing a rule to provide Americans with access to affordable, high quality health coverage and give states more flexibility to implement the law in a way that works for them."
While these marketplaces will not be made available until next year, states have until February 15 to apply for an exchange. States that choose not to will leave the federal government with the task of managing and operating these health marketplaces.
